Temwani Children’s Foundation’s Holiday Angel Project, provides essential clothing, hygiene and school supplies to orphaned and vulnerable children of the Ngombe neighborhood, in Lusaka, Zambia.

Last year, more than 200 students at three schools and a home for girls were given toothbrushes, socks, t-shirts, educational books and interactive toys.

The children were grateful for all of the gifts, but when we brought out the soccer balls and jump ropes at PaKachele Primary School, the kids went wild! More recently, the school hosted intramural sports competitions with other area schools, building confidence and teamwork among the children.

Additionally, students at PaKachele School received uniforms (seen below) tailored by the Mapalo Women’s sewing group of Ngombe and sweaters produced on a knitting machine donated through the Temwani Children’s Foundation in 2006.

With simple basic tools, orphaned and vulnerable children can grow and thrive! This year, we are striving to provide gifts to 300 children!

$25 or more ensures that each child receives a school sweater or uniform, toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, and school supplies.

Share your love this holiday season with an orphaned child in Zambia! Visit our Holiday Angels Page to learn more and make a donation!

HTMNC is a project-based school where students learn by experiencing the world around them. For the Fall they were able to incorporate their learning into their media classes by making Public Service Announcement videos, studying the geography and customs of Africa, fundraising planning, and public speaking. Temwani’s Technology Coordinator, Bevin Dunn, visited the students three times to show slideshows, play interactive games, and lead discussions.

Colorful kid-made magnets for sale.

The culmination of their hard work and study came together with a Fundraiser Night on December 14, 2010. Students ran a Silent Auction with Zambian items provided by Temwani, manned over 10 craft and informational booths, and sold snacks for a showing of the Lion King movie. The booths were full of creative ideas including decorating baseball caps, jewelry making and even a photo shoot with a classic car. The students also received a $100 grant from the Del Sol Lions Club to support their fundraiser costs.

Through their amazing efforts they were able to raise over $2000! The project also inspired their teacher Tracy Nathan to organize travel with a fellow teacher in the Summer of 2011 to visit Zambia and the PaKachele school in person.

Temwani is so proud of the kids, teachers and parents that supported this project, which is the largest school fundraising effort to date. Great job HTMNC and Zikomo (Thanks)!

In May of 2010, the Temwani Children’s Foundation was chosen as the beneficiary of the monthly outreach giving program, and a fall potluck was held to support the feeding program at the PaKachele Primary School. Since 2010, Unity Church has raised over $1,645 through their outreach giving program and a World Food Day Potluck.

Prayer and the power of optimistic thinking have long been believed to affect healthy outcomes, and in HIV-affected areas of Africa, prayer provides a pillar of support for communities experiencing much hardship and grief.

Angela Malik, director of three projects serving the people of N’gombe neighborhood, was inspired to promote the prayer exchange with the teachers and staff at both PaKachele Primary School and the Kondwa Day Centre for Orphans and Vulnerable children. The exchange was voluntary, however all of the teachers and staff chose to participate, sending back specific prayer requests for themselves and their families.

Many thanks for the dedication of support from Unity Church!

Drums pounding out rhythms of celebration, children singing songs of praise, women dancing, laughter rippling through the crowd….. March 25, 2011 marked the official opening ceremony for the PaKachele Primary School in Lusaka, Zambia. Board members Regan Murray, Bevin Dunn, and Leah Berger attended on behalf of the over 300 donors from the Temwani Children’s Foundation who have contributed to the building of the school over the past five years.

Children from the Kondwa Day Center for Orphans, the Seko House for Girls (from traumatized homes), and the students of PaKachele were all present for the ceremony.

An afternoon of performances and speeches wove a story of a community as diverse as the colorful chitenge cloth worn throughout the audience.

Portraying the founder and director of PaKachele Primary School-Angela Malik, a young girl acted the part of the busy woman beholden to her cell phone and always just one minute away from another meeting. The child’s humorous rendition captured the essence of the woman who still finds the time to sit down and talk with the many orphaned and vulnerable children to whom she has become a parental figure. The characterization rang so true that the real Angela Malik had to leave the stage to catch her breath from laughing so hard. (Below)

PaKachele School Board members, the Parents Association, government officials, and Angela took the stage to thank those who have made it possible to build the school, which serves the children of Ng’ombe and the neighboring community of Foxdale in Lusaka. In session since February 2010, grades 1, 2, and 3 are currently in attendance while the new classroom for grade four will open in early 2012. Subsequent grades will be added as more classrooms are built with funds obtained through the Temwani Children’s Foundation and other donors.

The school site also contains a large garden from which the harvest supports the children’s feeding program, with excess sold in local markets. Caregivers for the children participate in maintaining the crops, and can often be found on site during the school day. In this way, the school serves as a source of empowerment, not only to the children of the community, but to adults as well.

As the PaKachele teachers stated aptly in their performance that day, “Hunger has no age.” Like the rest of Zambia, the neighborhood of Ng’ombe has been impacted by the effects of a ten year drought in the country, in addition to HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty. Indeed, the PaKachele Primary School has already become a welcome addition to this small community located in the heart of the capital city, Lusaka.

Thank you, Temwani supporters, for continuing to invest in the orphans and vulnerable children of Zambia!
